Course Description

TEXTBOOK

The principal textbook is General Equilibrium Theory: An Introduction by Ross Starr. We'll be using the draft second edition --- it will be available on the web for this class. The first edition paperback, Cambridge University Press, 1997, should be available from Amazon --- though you should not need it; it should be pretty inexpensive.

Exams

Exams are open-book, open-notes, other people are closed. You may consult any published source for a take-home exam (cite your references). The exam you turn in should be your own personal work. Do not discuss with classmates, friends, professors (except with Prof. Starr or Ms. Fried --- who promise to be clueless), until the examination is collected.

Midterm 1 Form Alpha Answer Key
Midterm 1 Form Omega Answer Key

Grade and point distribution on Midterm 1: 86 to 100: A, 37% ; 71 to 85: B, 39% ; 61 to 70: C, 12%; 51 to 60: D, 6% ; 0 to 50: F, 6%.

There will be two in-class midterms, a take-home midterm, and a take-home final exam. Contrary to the Schedule of Classes, there will be no in-class final exam.

Midterm 2: There will be a brief take-home midterm on the web, Monday May 16, due Wednesday May 18. There will be an in-class midterm on Wednesday May 18. All notation on Midterm 2 is taken from Starr's "General Equilibrium Theory: An Introduction," draft second edition. There are eight forms of Midterm 2,

THE MIDTERM LOTTERY: WHICH EXAM SHOULD I TAKE?

There are eight forms of the exam, all of equal length and difficulty. They are

EVEN-EVEN-EVEN, EVEN-EVEN-ODD ,EVEN-ODD-EVEN , EVEN-ODD-ODD , ODD-EVEN-EVEN, ODD -EVEN-ODD, ODD -ODD-EVEN , ODD -ODD-ODD

How to determine which form is yours: Check the last three digits of your UCSD student ID number, in order. Match the form of your exam to which of your last three digits is odd or even. Example: Last three digits are 747, then the exam is odd-even-odd.

If you do not have a UCSD student ID number, choose exam odd-odd-odd. Write your UCSD student ID number (in addition to your name) on the cover of your blue book.

Take home midterm:

EvenEvenEven; EvenEvenODD; EvenODDeVEN; EvenODDODD;

ODDEVENEVEN; ODDEVENODD; ODDODDEVEN; ODDODDODD

Take-home Midterm 2 Answer Keys: All of the problems on the eight forms of the midterm can be found on the two Answer keys here: EvenEvenEvenAnswerKey; ODDODDODDAnswerKey

In-class Midterm 2 Answer Keys: Form Alpha Answer Key; Form Omega Answer Key

Midterm 2 Grade distribution: 95 to 100 A+ (11%), 75 to 94 A (43%), 70 to 74 A- (5%), 60 to 69 B+ (23%), 40 to 59 B (18%), 0 to 39 B- (2%). Percentages do not total 100% due to rounding.

Final Exam: The final exam will be take-home only. Available on the web, Wednesday June 1, due Friday June 3.

Procedures for the Take-Home Final Exam:

The exam will be available on the web by 4:00 PM Wednesday, June 1. It is in eight slightly different equally difficult forms just as the take-home midterm was. You should use the form that corresponds to the last three digits of your UCSD student ID number: even-even-even, even-even-odd, ., odd-odd-odd. There are four questions, all required. Security is open book, open notes, any published source (cite), other people are closed.

The exam is due in class, at the start of class, 2:00 PM Friday, June 3. Then there's a CUPCAKE party!

The exam MUST be submitted in a BLUE BOOK!

QUIET PERIOD DURING THE EXAMINATION PERIOD: From 3:45 PM Wednesday June 1 to 2:15 PM Friday June 3. During this period, do not discuss or communicate regarding the exam, the course, course content, course-relevant mathematics, course-relevant economics with anyone except Prof. Starr or Ms. Fried: classmates, friends, faculty are closed. Prof. Starr and Ms. Fried will share any course-relevant advice that goes to one student, with all by e-mail.
