In the class handout on course description and syllabus, the final exam
date should be March 20, NOT March 29. Also, my office hours will be 9
to 11 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.

The FIRST PERSON who brings to my attention a typo in the fourth edition
of my book, THAT IS NOT ALREADY IN THE FILE
      ../public/public_html/typos.html
will get a full point towards the course grade, if the typo is not just
a spelling mistake. A spelling mistake is worth half a point. The
maximum number of points one can earn this way is 5, and the bonus
points will be applied at the end of the course to give the maximum
benefit.

Try the Exercises in Chapter 1 and verify some answers in Appendix B.
By Thursday's lecture, read Chapter 1, Section 2.A.1, and Section 2.A.3.

Appendix B of the book has answers to selected Practice Problems and end
of chapter Exercises, those marked by a dagger. WHETHER OR NOT I ASSIGN
THEM, you should do all the Practice Problems and verify your answers
with those in Appendix C and Soft Reserves. This is the best way to
learn the material without outside help.
