R&D and Computer Investment Data used in
                  Berman, Bound & Griliches, QJE May 94.

1. The file SCHERER.DTA contain the FTC/Scherer data set described
in Adam Jaffe's documentation. Some of the variable names are now
slightly different: the workfile contains the following data for
193 3.5 digit industries.


SIC       : 4 digit SIC code, assigned by Adam Jaffe

ORND      : Origin R&D

PROPCT    : Pct process patents

URNDPR    : Used private R&D

URNDPU    : Used public R&D   (this was mis-labelled ORNDPR in
            Adam's write-up, at least the data tape had this
            instead.)

OPAT      : Origin patents

UPATPR    : Used private patents

UPATPU    : Used public patents

Note: Documentation is presented in Scherer(84), in Zvi Griliches (ed) R&D,
Patents and Productivity pp. 420-423. Data are from 1974.

2. The file ci778287.dta contains the ratio of computer investment to total
investment by 4 digit sic in each of the years 1977, 1982, 1987. The source is
the Census of Manufactures. Documentation is provided in the paper.
